Embracing Positive Language Challenge
Our Goal: To increase awareness of how we use language, particularly focusing on avoiding double negatives and embracing empowering, positive affirmations.
10 Steps to Success —
1) Identify Double Negatives:
For one week, listen to how people around you respond.
Note when they use phrases like "no problem," "no worries," "can't complain," or "not bad."
2) Reflect on Your Own Speech:
Pay attention to your own use of language.
Are you using double negatives?
Keep a mental or written tally.
3) Eliminate Double Negatives:
Challenge yourself to replace double negatives with positive confirmations.
For example:
Instead of "No problem," say "Of course" or "I'd be happy to."
Instead of "No worries," simply say "Sure" or "Certainly."
4) Practice Affirmative Responses:
When someone asks you to do something, practice saying "Yes" or "I will."
Make it a point to affirm your commitment directly.
5) Empowerment Exercise:
When feeling an emotion, take a moment to recognize it's your choice to feel this way.
Replace phrases like "You made me angry" with "I choose to feel angry about this."
6) Feedback Loop:
Ask friends or family to point out when you revert to double negatives or victim language.
Use their feedback to improve.
7) Journal Your Journey:
Keep a small journal or digital note where you write down instances where you successfully used positive language and how it changed the interaction or your feelings.
8) Weekly Review:
At the end of each week, review your journal or notes.
Reflect on:
How has changing your language affected your interactions?
Did you feel more empowered or in control of your emotions?
Share your experiences with someone or in a group to discuss the impact.
9) Set a New Goal:
Each week, set a new, specific goal related to your language use.
It could be focusing on a different type of double negative or exploring more empowering phrases.
10) Commit to Long-Term Change:
Make this challenge an ongoing part of your life.
Consider it a habit you're developing for clearer, more positive communication.
